In Memoriam

2/17/02

We regret the loss of former NYNG member Rosario A. Zappulla, MD, PhD, Chairman, New Jersey Neuroscience Institute and professor of Neurosurgery. Russ died suddenly last week while attending a medical conference in New Mexico. Dr. Zappulla had been with JFK Medical Center since 1992. A mass will be held on Wednesday at 10:00 a.m. at St. Raphael Church, 346 East Mt. Pleasant Avenue in Livingston. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be sent to the American Diabetes Association. A formal "Celebration of Life" will be held in the near future at JFK Medical Center in memory of Dr. Rosario (Russ) Zappulla. For further information, contant Lisa D. Ravdin, Ph.D. Phone: (212) 746-2344;;Direct: (212) 746-6391 e-mail: ldravdin@med.cornell.edu

Frank LeFever, NYNG President writes: I am stunned. Russ was one of those guys we assume will go on and on like that energized bunny. We were proud of his double degree, and I especially liked seeing a neurosurgeon who went on to become a neuropsychologist listed as a NYNG Board member on our brochures: it was a concrete statement of many of the things I felt NYNG should aspire to.

Beyond that, while he was still based at Mount Sinai and able to participate regularly in NYNG activities (I loved the view of Central Park when he hosted Board meetings), he contributed ideas and sweat equity to NYNG--including organizing a cutting-edge conference that led to the first of our (so far) three New York Academy of Sciences annals volumes, "Windows on the Brain"; a "best-seller" (according to NYAS Annals Editor, Bill Boland) for several years, and I believe now out of stock.

He maintained a grueling pace of surgical work and research, and (I'm told) reaching into his own pocket for expenses, often, especially on behalf of students and research assistants; generous with his time, also.

I saw him last at one of our Academy evening meetings, and he said he was interested in renewing active Board work. I know he wanted to, and had he been able to steal any time or energy from his New Jersey (over?)committments he might have managed to goad us into what he tried to goad us into at the last Board meeting he hosted, i.e. our own journal.

Like others before him, he no doubt greatly overestimated not only the time he could spare these last few years, but also the total time remaining. He joins splendid predecessors, other NYNG Board members we remember with pride, affection, and sorrow: first Mitch Kietzman, then (so recently!) Jim Tweedy; and now Russ.

12/00

It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Jim Tweedy, former member of the New York Neuropsychology Board of Directors. In recent years, Jim had a private practice and worked at Connecticut Rehabilitation near New Haven. A memorial service was held Branford, CT, on Saturday, December 9, 2000.
